‘What is FiTREP?’

Rutgers University’s Fish Tagging Research and Education Program (FiTREP) is a volunteer-driven pilot initiative aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the movement and migration patterns of summer flounder within New Jersey’s coastal estuaries.

How do I report a tagged fish?’

Example photo of where our tags will typically be located on a Summer flounder. There may be one or two green tags, depending on the fish and the time since it was first tagged.

Our tags are green, plastic T-bar tags that read ‘Rutgers Tagging Research’ on one side, and are attached to the top side of the fish. If you catch one of our tagged fish and would like to report it, you will need the following information of the fish:

  • Species name
  • Tag Number (This is usually a 5-digit number)
  • Length of the fish
  • Location caught

By reporting in a recaptured fish, you are contributing to our database thats better understands fish movement ecology, AND will be eligible for our end-of-season lottery drawing!

You can report the tag using one of the following methods:

1) Scan the following QR code to our online reporting form

FiTREP Recapture Form

2) Call (856) 391-7652 to speak with one of our FiTREP team members!
