Delaware Bay Derelict Crab Trap Removal Project Meeting – Industry Listening Session

A group of people sitting in a room watching a presentation
Steve Evert (Stockton University) leads discussion with the commercial crab industry regarding suggestions for best practices for derelict gear removal in the Delaware Bay.

Thank you to everyone who came to our first industry meeting for the upcoming derelict crab trap removal project!

We’d like to thank our partners at Stockton University, Dr. Mark Sullivan and Steve Evert, and their collaborative industry partners, Karen and Warren Unkert, for providing us with invaluable knowledge to the ins-and-outs of gear removal. The meeting occurred on January 22nd at the Haskin Shellfish Research Lab, where 18 industry members provided us with insightful feedback on gear hotspots and ideas for removal, recycling, and gear identification. This project will aim to remove abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear from the Delaware Bay with the help of crabbing industry members.

We look forward to getting out on the water in the winter of ’26/’27, so Let’s Get Cracking!
